The programme's objective is to develop and demonstrate miniature fast response pressure probes for use in aerodynamic testing required to improve aircraft engine design. These are innovative probes using optical methods to sense the motion of very small diaphragms in response to rapid pressure changes in high-speed gas flow. Optical fibres permit the use of smaller diaphragms than have been practical using electrical sensing methods, and deliver laser light efficiently to the probe over many metres of connecting fibre without significant loss. The technology of micromachining will be used to make small silicon diaphragms located at the ends of optical fibres, which will be embedded within the probe to sense pressure changes at a given point in the flow. The programme is a collaboration between the Fibre Optics Group at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, the Osney Laboratory, Oxford University, and DERA Pyestock Farnborough, where full-scale aerodynamic test facilities are available.
