The aim of this proposal is to consider existing means and, more importantly, to devise new ways of using flow field data obtained as output from CFD codes to improve drag estimation. By providing accurate estimates of the various components of drag this will help to guide how design changes might be made to better aircraft performance. Presently, when processing the output from typical CFD codes used by industry there can be substantial differences between the drags calculated from an integration of surface forces and from wake integrals. It is planned to use flow field information obtained from Euler and Navier Stokes codes applied to aerofoils and wings, and wing/nacelle and wing/body combinations. An assessment will be made of how details of a computation (eg mesh resolution, accuracy of shock capture, domain size and boundary treatment, numerical viscosity) affect drag estimates. Attention will be paid to improving drag prediction methods when shock waves are present. The use of CFD generated flow field data opens up new possibilities for estimating drag employing volume and surface integral methods involving vorticity. These methods will also be suitable for use with unsteady Euler and Navier Stokes codes to estimate instantaneous forces.
