Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed project investigates the unsteady fluid flow around high lift devices (a leading-edge slat and a single element trailing-edge flap) on a two-dimensional wing at high incidence. The unsteady flow field involved is characterised by flow separation, shear layer instabilities, vortex production and convection, interaction between vortices and geometry, vortex shedding, and possible pressure feedback. It represents a source of far-field noise radiation. The proposed method is the solutions of short-time Trynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations (TRANS) in the near field and assessment of the far-field noise using Lighthill's acoustic analogy. A wind tunnel experiment will also be performed to provide a near-field unsteady flow database. The proposed method represents a timely and achievable approach in assessing the noise generation mechanism of large vortical structures and their interaction with aerodynamic geometry. In analysing the unsteady flow field and the noise generation mechanism, methods will be studied in order to achieve reduction of noise and/or flow oscillation.
