Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose a joint experiment and theoretical study to characterise the electronic structure of conjugated polymers. Because of their great technological significance, we will study conjugated polymers incorporating phenyl rings in the polymer backbone. We wish to study the relationship between chemical and electronic structure, the evolution of excited states in oligomers of various lengths, the effects of broken spatialsymetry. The experimental work will consist of absorption, electroabsorption, two-photon absorption and third harmonic generation measurements. The state energies and dipole transition moments will be determined by using a model Hamiltonion based on the Pariser-Parr-Pople model. The Hamiltonian will be solved by density matrix reformalisation group methods and non-linear optical spectra will be calculated using a sum over states method. Semi-empirical modelling of the spectra will also be performed. The interaction between experiment and theory will benefit both aspects of the work and lead to deeper understanding of conjugated polymer photophysics.
