Powder neutron diffraction (PND) is an essential technique in the characterisation of inorganic organic, organometallic, geochemical, alloy and engineering materials. Limitations in the information obtainable using the technique derive from deficiencies in the nuclear properties (absorption, scattering length) which control the range of materials to which the method can be applied and the quality of the derived structural information. In addition problems inherent in powder methods involving extraction of peak intensities limit the quality of the structural results. With the advent of high detector flux powder neutron diffractometers (e.g. POLARIS, D20 and GEM) it is becoming possible to use very small sample volumes for experiments. This will enable the use of isotopically labelled materials in experiments in order to overcome problems associated with absorption and poor scattering power. In addition through the use of isotopes and multiple data sets higher quality structural information can be extracted from PND data. Isotopes will be used to study the structures of a wide range of important materials initially to demonstrate and quantify the benefits of the methods and then to obtain the desired higher quality structure definition. The use of isotopes by other UK groups using high flux diffractometers will also be fostered.
