The synthesis and late transition metal co-ordination chemistry of functionalised N-pyrrolylphosphines will be developed, and the catalytic potential of the products assessed. The research will focus on four classes of ligand:(i) bulky N-pyrrolylphosphines: the effect on the co-ordination chemistry of substituents in the 2- and/or 5-positions of the pyrrole ring(s) and of focused rings will be examined. The influence of this increased steric bulk on the activity and selectivity of rhodium hydroformylation catalysts will be evaluated.(ii) P, N-donor ligands: ligands based on pyrroles containing additional nitrogen donors such as 7-azaindole will be prepared and studied, and the effects of large ligand bite angles will be examined through investigation of carbonylation reactions of alkyl palladium compounds.(iii) P, O-donor ligands: ligands incorporating ketone and ether functionalities will be prepared, and their hemilability on late transition metals examined.(iv) oligomeric N-pyrrolylphospines: the potential incorporation of more than one N-pyrrolylphospines into a ligand will be explored with the synthesis and study of ligands derived from 2, 2-bipyrrole and octamethyl[4]calixpyrrole.The synthetic work will be supported by molecular modelling studies in order to provide input into the design of second generation ligands.
