Summary on Grant Application Form
Funding is requested to carry out polarised NEXAFS studies, using a new environmental chamber on beamline U3C at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at Brookhaven Laboratory USA, for molecular interfacial structures. The new facility, which has been built with 108k provided by Heriot-Watt University, will enable the collection of NEXAFS spectra in the ultra-soft X-ray region around the C, N, and O K-edges (ca. 200-700eV), in the temperature range 200-450k and for a pressure range 1-10-10 mbar, including wet and soft-solid interfacial structures. The results yielded from the proposed research programme can be expected to significantly advance our understanding of the structural chemistry associated with molecular surfaces and interfaces.
