The main aim of the proposed work is to explore a remarkably short synthetic entry to the natural product forskolin. During the course of these studies, we aim to address a number of substantial challenges, including the issue of reversibility in aldol reactions between hindered partners and the use of ring-opening-closing alkene metathesis reactions for the construction of polycyclic intermediates having the forskolin skeleton. The use of alkene metathesis in such situations will also be examined in a more general sense, and when combined with rapid synthesis of functionalised precursors using the chiral base approach, it may lead to a useful new synthetic strategy.
