We propose the construction, complete characterisation and application of novel, highly efficient, fibre raman amplifiers based upon simple configuration employing fused WDM couplers for the demonstration of transparency over the spectral range 1250 nm - 1650 nm. Broad band, high base bit rate source will be developed using continuum generation of amplified pulses from electro-absorption modulator sources, to provide synchronised test pulse streams. Using a single pump fibre raman laser of selectable operational wavelength, stimulated raman amplifiers will be constructed and characterised throughout the complete spectural range specified above. Employing single pump lines at the appropriate wavelength we will examine mechanisms to extend the usable bandwidth of Er-doped fibre amplifiers to both the long and short wavelength ranges of the Er peak. Dual pump lines will be employed to produce gain flattened profiles and the performance of this device will be directly compared with our theoretical predictions. Initially individual pump lasers will be used, however, it is proposed to investigate dual and multiple wavelength operating pump lasers in new configurations. In-band filtering as well as multiple line pumping will be used to extend the useable bandwidths. Collaborative systems-testing of characterised amplifiers will be undertaken at BT laboratories.
