We have recently observed the strongest second-harmonic generation (SHG) to datefrom an LB film by interleaving layers of a novel cationic coumarin dye with those of a suitable spacer. The second-order susceptibility (Xzzz) of the alternate-layer film is 300 pm V-1 at 1.064 um and this increses to 500 pm V-1 for the non-interleaved Z-type structure (cf. 11.8 pm V-1 for LiNBO3). The films are stable and have shown no sign of deterioration. Thus, we aim to optimise the result by the design and synthesis of film-forming materials with improved second-order properties. This will be carried out in collaboration with Professor Grummt in Jena (molecular modelling) and Dr Gentle in Brisbane and Tsukuba (X-ray synchroton diffraction).Optically nonlinear dyes.
