Summary on Grant Application Form
Well-defined, laminar flames at 1 atm and with carefully chosen additives will be sampled into an existing mass spectrometer for studying the positive and negative ions in such gases. This proposals made because computer-calculations of electron concentrations is rocket exhausts require more accurate measurements than are currently available of the rate constants of two types of chemical reaction producing negative ions. The work is timely because of a recently improved understanding of how best to sample negative ions from flames. In addition, there is a need to find novel, but stable, negative ions in flames. Also, negative ions will be used to measure the concentrations of reactive intermediates which participate in the production of both NOx and soot in flames.
