The proposed research will determine the extent to which the dispersion of particles is affected by the large density gradient in the viscidity of the reaction zone. The measurements will quantify the drag and lift forces acting on particles (droplets or rigid particles) along their trajectories across the reaction zone and compare them with those in the corresponding non-reactive flow to quantify the contribution of the density gradient on particle motion as a function of particle diameter, density and residence time in the reaction zone. The experimental results will establish a semi-empirical correlation between forces on particles and flow density gradient and this law combined with simplified numerical calculations will evaluate how particle dispersion within turbulent reacting flows may be modified by large density gradients. It will, therefore, lead to recommendations for improved models for the prediction of particle dispersion in turbulent reacting flows.
