It is well known that a torsion group (that is, a group in which every element has finite order) acting by isomatries on a tree must have a global fixed point, and that therefore such a group can not be decomposed as an HNN extension or a non-trivial amalgamated free product. It is natural to ask how this result maybe generalised. Farb, Niblo and Sageev showed that any torsion group acting on a CAT (-1) simplicial complex necessarily has a global fixed point. It is proposed to generalise this result by considering actions on CAT (0) complexes. It is hoped that results of that kind will shed light on the question of whether or not there exists an infinite, finitely presented torsion group.
