The approach adopted in this project is to perform full electrothermal simulations, using equivalent-circuit representations, of real engineering applications. In order to accomplish this the heatsink will have been pre-characterised using a full-and accurate FE thermal analysis. Essentially, the transient FE analysis will act in much the same way as experimental data, in that it will be used to extract parameters for its equivalent circuit representation. This time-consuming process will only need to be carried out once for each component in the cooling system, after which the results will be stored in a library for subsequent use. This would maintain the speed of compact device models whilst having a fully rigorous representation of the thermal network. Further validation will be provided through experimental verification, which will be carried as described in tasks 5 and 6. In addition to characterisation of the thermal components, it is essential to provide values for the parameters to the compact models for the electronic components (pins, MOSFETs, and IGBTs).
