Summary on Grant Application Form
Neutron inelastic scattering investigations are proposed to study the effects of local environment on the phonon-roton excitations and momentum distributions of He-4 and He-3/He-4 mixtures in aerogel, xerogel and vycor glasses. These confining media have very different pore morphologies and porosities, leading to a range of important effects on the properties of the quantum liquids. The variation with temperature of the excitation energy and lifetime (linewidth) will be examined for He-4 in contrasting porous media, a special study of roton energies and lifetimes close to the lambada transition will be made, and the effects of confinement on the Bose Condensate fraction investigated. For mixtures of He-3 in He-4, the changes to n(p) imposed by the restricted geometry will be studied using the extremely high-energy resolution of IRIS and the density and temperature dependence of n (p) determined. The Fermi surface of liquid He-3, and the excitations and momentum distributions of bulk He-3/He-4 mixtures will be probed. This programme will exploit the high resolution and signal of the ISIS spectrometers, IRIS and MARI, complemented by the IN5 andIN6 instruments at ILL.
