Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to provide additional theoretical support for current experiments on superfluid 3He at ultralow temperatures. The specific areas for which we require this support are as follows :1. We have recently measured the decay of vortex tangles in superfluid 3He at ultralow temperatures. Since there are at present no theoretical models for the decay of vortex tangles, we propose to use part of the PDRA position for the simulation of such decay processes.2. We are presently in the process of measuring the dynamics of the A-B phase boundary at ultralow temperatures. These are very original and interesting experiments which are of general interest within the condensed matter community and beyond. We propose to use part of the PDRA to develop and simulate the theory of A-B boundary dynamics to allow a direct comparison with our current experiments.3.0 The new mode of spin precession called Persistent induction signal (PIS) is still not understood, despite a large amount of experimental data. We hope to use the remainder of the PDRA position to explore possible structures of the PIS state via computer simulations.
