The proposed research aims at addressing current needs in the study of fuel vapour-droplet releases. The principal objective of this proposal is the theoretical study of formation, combustion and consequent effects of vapour-droplet clouds. The research method will combine development of a physical theory of transient releases and numerical simulations. The physical model for transient two-phase releases will consider the main phenomena and governing spherical flame propagation through the vapour-droplet mixture will be solved to determine the characteristics of combustion waves in these systems. Numerical model accounting for non-equilibrium interaction between the droplets and gas will enable the study of release patterns prior to and after ignition, combustion of the cloud and its fluid dynamics and radiation effects on the environment. Comparison with experimental and field test data and case history studies for liquefied hydrocarbon releases will be given. The results will provide an insight into fundamentals of two-phase combustion and uncontrolled combustion of hydrocarbon releases. The results of the project have direct applications to industrial (oil, gas and chemical process industry) and domestic safety, fire and explosion research and engineering and quantitative risk assessment.
