Professor Prasad will familiarise the PI (DFP) with recent developments from his group on shock dynamics and the computing of a weakly nonlinear ray theory (WNRT) along rays determined from a coupled set of equations. With the PI he will seek a formulation incorporating ideas from the PIs 1971 paper, but applied to rapid pulses which may include shocks. The gas-dynamics equations will be cast into an iterative form, using simple wave relations and Rankine-Hugoniot shock relations to describe the pulse to leading order. Estimates of magnitudes of iterative corrections will be used to determine dependence of the Riemann invariants on the total pulse strength at each location. These valued will appear in the resulting ray equations. Hence, lateral derivatives of the pulse intensity will cause ray bending (a nonlinear diffraction effect).Formulation of test examples for converging pulses and for sonic boom calculation would be desirable, though numerical implementation may have to wait until Professor Prasad returns to Bangalore. Continues collaboration with colleagues in the Oxford University Computing Laboratory will be investigated.
