The research proposed is intended to investigate the possibility of developing Ziegler-Natta alkene polymerisation catalysts based upon organomagnesium complex with nitrogen donor ancillary ligands. Although current catalyst systems are based on zirconium with cyclopentadienyl derived ligands, there is now a considerable body of evidence which indicates that the required activity is not restricted to such systems. Although magnesium has never previously attracted attention as a candidate for alkene polymerisation catalysts, there is evidence that it is more effective than aluminium alkyls at inserting alkenes into the M-C bond to give chain growth. This is of particular significance given a very recent report of the activity of [(N2)A1R] + species (N2 = amidinate) as ethene polymerisation catalysts. We intend to investigate the co-ordination chemistry of organomagnesium species with nitrogen donor ligands with a view to generating a catalytically active system of the type [(N2/3) MgR] + / 0 to mimic the active species in metallocene systems. The choice of nitrogen donor ligand is seen as critical in imparting the required reactivity, and a variety of systems will be considered including di/triamines, amides, amidines, triazines, beta-diketimines etc. The selection of ligand steric and electronic characteristics will be aided by molecular modelling and quantum mechanical techniques.
