Summary on Grant Application Form
ummary Describe the proposed research in about 200 words. In the UK about 1W of the population benefit from artificial hip joints. Most of the prostheses that are presently implanted utilise plyethylene as a bearing surface. It is now recognised that micron size polyethylene wear particles cause bone resorption and loosening in the second decade of the lifetime of the prostheses. As patients are living longer and greater numbers of prostheses are implanted in younger patients, the alternative hard on hard bearings are being introduced to provide a lifetime beyond twenty years. This Medlink Project brings together two universities (Leeds and Bradford) and three industries Johnson & Johnson orthopaedics, multi Arc (UK) Ltd and Firth Rixson Superalloys Ltd, to investigate thick surface treatments for metal on metal bearings for hip prostheses to surface engineer thick hybrid bearing couples, with reduced wear and reduced biological reactivity to wear particles and to extend the lifetime of the prosthesis well beyond 20 years.
