Summary on Grant Application Form
Web based material processing is a very high speed process. Printing of coloured patterns onto textiles, plastics and wallpaper is undertaken at Web velocities of 2m/sec and spatial resolutions as small as 0.05mm. the process is normally in the form of a multi-stage printing roller transfer line machine system. Endemic in this approach is the large length o process material between input and output stages, which together with the high processing speeds presents substantial problems for in-process quality control, particularly when piece part cutting and wrapping is undertaken at the output stage of the line. A system for real-time colour quality control is required to allow reengineering of this part of the process. This proposed research programme builds on the success of past work by the applicants, where novel high speed imaging systems have been applied to web based laser materials processing and the application of knowledge based systems to the control of complex processes (e.g. rock crushing, packet handling). The proposed research seeks to achieve a knowledge based real-time quality assurance system which will allow the web processing industries to halve response time to small lot production requirements.
