Responsive lanthanide complexes will be made and their solution behaviour studied in detail with respect to the modulation of their luminescence by reversible and selective binding of H+, (HC03) - (hp04)2- and other chelating oxyanions. Lifetime (tau) emission intensity and (for anion work) circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) measurements will be used to monitor binding either at the inbuilt chromophore (eg protonation varies the first excited singlet and/or triplet energy levels) or at the metal centre (successive displacement of bound waters enhances the luminescence lifetime and drastically changes the CPL spectra). In addition terbium complexes that respond to dissolved oxygen concentration will be examined and analogous lipophillic derivatives prepared with a view to using flow-injection analytical methods in an optode .
