Summary on Grant Application Form
In the metals production industry, the UK is the work leader in the design of low level closed-loop controllers. However, for supervisory and plant wide control systems it has lost ground by failing to embrace new technologies. This project aims to redress this situation and to deliver a competitive advantage to UK producers and suppliers through the development of a generic expert system for supervisory control of rolling mills. The core of the expert system will include a model based set-up system (to ready a mill for optimum performance before tolling begins), fault detection diagnostics, and a set of low level control strategies. The new development will improve the operational efficiency plants manufacturing hot band aluminium plate and coil by increasing productivity and yield; it will improve the competitiveness of the supplier of mill and automation equipment (Kvaerner Metals); and it will improve the responsiveness of the producers of aluminium plates and coils to the demands and needs of customers.
