The nucleation and growth of metal electrodeposited in templates is of interest because it can be influenced by the template geometry as well as by factors relevant to all electrodeposition processes such as the choice of electrolyte and deposition potential. In this project, the early and later stages of deposition in small area template features prepared by optical lithography will be investigated systematically using two complementary techniques: current-time measurements (chronoamperometry) and scanning force microscopy (both ex-situ and in-situ). Both techniques have been used extensively to study electrodeposition on conventional flat substrates, but scanning force microscopy in particular has rarely been applied to template electrodeposition. We will apply them to a range of metal-on-metal and metal-on-semiconductor systems with different degrees of lattice mismatch.
