This proposal aims to follow the initial nucleation and growth of materials at templating interfaces. The main technique is to be used will be x-ray energy resolved refection (ERR), with simultaneous Brewster Angle microscopy to obtain structural and kinetic detail in the plane of the interface. The materials under consideration are inorganic mesoporous silicas which have been templated to grow in solution using surfactant micelle superstructures, but the growth of the solid materials will be forced at air/water and solid/liquid interfaces by the presence of a second layer of templating material. In the former case the effect of insoluble monolayer phase, packing and head group on the kinetics and structural characteristics will be investigated, and in the solid/liquid case we will use the penetrating power of ERR to measure growth patterns at modified surfaces.
