The proposed research will consist of rheological characterisation, extrusion experiemtn and numerical modelling for an extrusion grade linear low desnity polyethylene melt. The material will be characterised in a simple shear using a Wagner integral constitutive equation with relaxation spectrum and a damping function. The experimental characterisation of melt extrusion will be carried out unsing an extruder rig where the die swell is observed and the global stress field over the slit die is monitored usinf rheo-optics unit. The extrusion process will also be realised usng a newly desinged Multipass Rheometer. We wish to modify the extrusion silt surface and observe the free surface instabilities in terms of the following slit boundary conditions: a) metal surface b) metal surface with slip additive c) PTFE surface d) gas assisted surface. A numerical simulation approach will be developed to model the melt extrusion applying both stick and slip experiemtnal slit surface boundary conditions. The simulation result will be matched with the experimental pbservation and evaluated in relation to a variety of other resources.
