Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this programme of fundamental research is to investigate more deeply the algorithms for full- body tracking deployed to date. It is to be complementary to on going work in technology transfer and applied research, pursued between partners.Until recently, Full body visual tracking systems relied on markers, which are cumbersome and imprecise. Recent research progress including that between the partners in this collaboration has demonstrated markerless tracking of arms and of facial features. However, although articulated body tracking from silhouettes has shown to be feasible, it requires considerable computational expense. Real-time (Video) Processing rates have been achieved for facial tracking, but not yet for articulated limbs. It is believed that more efficient algorithms could be developed in the nature of optimisation with respect to kinematic variables were more thoroughly understood. The aim is to tap understanding of projective geometry, robotic kinematics and optimisation theory to tackle challenges posed by non- convexity, Kinematics singularity and the high dimensionality of kinematic models for articulated human body motion.
