Summary on Grant Application Form
We plan to use photonic crystal fibre as a unique laboratory for investigating nonlinear optical interactions between high-power laser pulses and nonlinear media such as liquids and gases. The investigation will proceed by filling the holes in long (several metres) lengths of PCF with the medium, and then using this medium to confine light in a single-mode pure-silica core. The very long interaction lengths coupled with a significant overlap between the guided mode and the medium will produce a monomode waveguide with most unusual nonlinear optical properties, resulting in very low thresholds for nonlinear optical processes. We proposed using a several metre length of PCF as a fibre-based Hydrogen cell. This will allow us far greater intensity/interaction length products than have been previously attainable, with associated reduction in threshold for SRS. We plan to fabricate a prototype polarisation switch based on a liquid-filled PCF. We would like to investigate intensity-dependent waveguiding effects and Brillouin scattering in a photonic crystal fibre, which could be filled with various liquids or gases.
