Inverse acoustic imaging enables one to construct an image of the interior properties of a domain from acoustic measurements made at a boundary of the domain. It is used in many areas, for instance ultrasound medical imaging, geophysical prospecting and the non-destructive testing of materials. The aim of this research is to advance the use of a novel moments method to the nonlinear, inverse imaging problem. This method is tailored to the acoustic equation and the heat equation and has significant advantages over current methods. The research will be concerned with finding the optimum way to reconstruct an image by the moments method for various classes of inverse data. In particular, the important practical cases of incomplete and inaccurate inverse data will be considered. The research could ultimately result in much greater resolution and accuracy in imaging which would bring benefits in all areas of application. For instance in the medical imaging field, it could lead to the earlier detection of tumours or liver disease, say, allowing for earlier and more effective treatment. In geophysical exploration it could lead to more accurate identification of oil and other mineral resources, reducing exploration costs and maximising potential yield.
