Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme aims to capitalise on a recent discovery from our laboratories that functionalised maleimides undergo an interesting formal [5+2] photocycloaddition to give fused bi- and tricyclic azepines in moderate to excellent yields. Once the scope and generality of this reaction has been explored, then it will be used as the key step in the construction of a number of alkaloid skeletons. This will be achieved by attaching a variety of alkene units to maleimide via Mitsunobu coupling of the corresponding alkenols. Irradiation of the resulting functionalised imides will lead to the alkaloid skeletons directly. These products will then have all the necessary functionality present to complete the synthesis of the respective alkaloids.
