Summary on Grant Application Form
The huge programme of work to be carried out with the aid if the proposed new facilities is best summarised by an extended list of key words. In general analytical work is combined with intensive computation. Magnetic layered materials: Exchange coupling and giant magnetoresistance with interfacial resistance roughness or small transverse dimensions, a real-space approach to the effect of roughness and steps on interface magnetocrystalline anisotropy, tunnelling magnetoresistance.Strongly correlated and low dimensional electron systems: The numerical renormalization group approach to impurity and lattice problems, breakdown of Fermi liquid theory, dynamical CPA for the double-exchange model, high temperature expansions, transport in quantum wires.Flux motion in superconductors: Investigations of pinning mechanisms using molecular dynamics, Langevin dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations, effect of disorder on melting.Self-organised criticality, fungal growth, biological evolution, sticking and sliding frictions.Fluids at interfaces: Fluctuation effects at wetting transitions, effect of rough surfaces.Random matrices and disordered systems.
