Summary on Grant Application Form
This research will provide the statistical procedures and theoretical underpinning required for the assessment of risks associated with extreme temperature fluctuations in Magnox nuclear reactors. The results of the research will have other applications but this single application is expected to justify the effort and the research is described in this context. The research will develop models for the pattern of statistical variation of temperatures over a spatial grid of some 4000 points. Of greatest interest will be the accurate modelling of extreme temperature fluctuations and the prediction of limits on these variations by spatial interpolation of the small proportion of actual measured temperatures.Deterministic predictions of the temperature fluctuations are also available from a reactor physics model but these are unsuitable for direct use because of known limitations on their accuracy. The research will also develop methods of spatially filtering these predictions so that they may be used to improve the interpolations. New methods will be used to calculate from these interpolations the total annual risk of any reactor channel temperature exceeding a critical value.
