Offshore structures are subject to a wide variety of environmental loads (such as wind, wave and current) all of which exhibit a high degree of statistical uncertainty. Probabilistic procedures can account for these uncertainties by establishing the statistical properties of load and response and hence are necessary for risk-based assessment of these structures. The major obstacle is the nonlinearity of the drag component of Morison's wave loading which results in non-Gaussian assumption for response leads to significant underestimation of its extreme values, application of probabilistic models have largely been limited to linear spectral analyses, with the assumption that response is Gaussian distributed. This is because the nonlinear models, which correctly predict distributions of loads, displacements and stresses, are very time-consuming and hence are limited in the size of platforms they can handle. The limitations of the existing models are expected to be resolved, however, through the application of new techniques, which should lead to a drastic reduction in computer run-time demands. As a result, the methodologies will be applicable to refined models of complex dynamic structures.
