The overall aim of the proposed project is to improve the manufacturabililty, performance and usability of a novel technology recently developed within the UK for miniature display systems. The technology uses ferroelectric liquid crystal driven by an active matrix CMOS backplane. The feasibility of the technology has previously been demonstrated in the SLMIDIS project which clearly indicated the UK to have a work lead in this technology. The main purpose of this project is to develop (I) manufacturing and packaging processes which will reduce the performance shortcomings of the early SLIMDIS devices and (ii) manufacturing and packaging processes which will enhance the potential competitiveness of the technology and, thereby of the UK companies exploiting it. The programme will also transfer the technology to the collaborating companies and train the project's researchers in the key future areas of silicon substrate preparation and display construction. In summary, the successful pursuit of the research proposed here will significantly increase the opportunity of r the UK to benefit from the exploitation and commercialization of this fledgling display technology. The project is thus in close accord with the stated mission of the EPSRC.
