Heterogeneity is a common property of many industrially important materials. Diverse examples include polymer blends, surface coatings, catalysts pellets, processed foods, oil- and water-based rocks and solids, complex chemical mixtures etc. There are two major problems that need to be addressed w.r.t. measurement and characterisation of such materials. The first is that analytical measurements on these materials particularly those of a spectroscopic or imaging nature, are made using expensive instruments and highly trained scientists and can be demanding on both these resources in order to achieve a specified data quality. On the other hand, sophisticated signal/image processing techniques can be used more cheaply to simultaneously enhance signal to noise and resolution of less complete and more noisy data sets, thus reducing the demands on time and manpower. The second problem is that the spectra or images, obtained from such complex materials, defy simple characterisation, as they do not contain clearly structured and delineated objects (or features with distinguishable properties). Therefore, more sophisticated mathematical methods are needed to quantify and classify such complex data sets. This proposal aims to address both problems by developing novel and efficient methods for information recovery and for characterisation of such complex materials and products.
