Algorithmic stable matching problems arise whenever there is a need for a matching process that takes account the preferences of the participants. There is a rich body of theory associated with stable matching, and some important large-scale applications, for example, in centralised schemes for the matching of medical students to hospitals. This application area is well established in the US and elsewhere, but less so in the UK where the matching model is more complex and the resulting algorithmic problems more challenging.Recent work by the PI in collaboration with the West of Scotland Postgraduate Medical Education Board has led to the development of a pilot matching scheme, based on substantially new algorithms, which is planned for introduction from the year 2000. But further research into the mathematical structure underlying stable matching problems, and the development of new efficient algorithms for additional variants of the problems, are needed in order that a fully optimal and dlexiable matching scheme can be finalised for his and related contexts. The proposed project will investigate the appropriate mathematical framework for these new stable-matching variants with a view to the development and implementation of a comprehensive range of applicable stable matching algorithms.
