Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to develop titanium complexes with chiral salen derived ligands as chiral catalysts for the asymmetric addition of hydrogen cyanide and trimethylsilyl cyanide to aldehydes and ketones. Preliminary investigations have shown that these catalysts have substantial advantages over existing catalysts, including activity at room temperature, high turn overs and good to excellent asymmetric induction. The mechanism of the asymmetric induction will be investigated by NMR studies, kinetic and related studies, and by the synthesis of potential intermediates. The use of the catalysts in related reactions such as the addition if cyanide to imines, ring opening of expoxides and azirinides by cyanide, and use of other nucleophiles such as trimethylsilyl azide and silyl enol ethers will also be investigated.
