Summary on Grant Application Form
The characteristic of this visit will be interchange of ideas between Cannon and mathematicians in Warwick (Holt, Epstein, Reif, Mond) and other UK Universities. He will make short visits to several other universities; Exeter, Bath, Oxford, Cambridge, Birmingham, QMW London, St Andrews and Liverpool are likely destinations. Cannon will use his enormous expertise and experience in practical computation in pure mathematics to advise and assist on matters concerning planning, efficiency and implementation details. The research will encompass a large number of different areas, and probably no single mathematician has a detailed knowledge of each of these topics. However, recent developments in computational pure mathematics are resulting in ever-increasing inter-dependency between the algorithms in the different areas. Cannon has a sufficient overview of the situation to be able to organise and implement a software environment in which the best algorithms and implementation from the individual areas can be effectively used together. More specifically, we expect significant progress to be made in the areas of finite groups, decomposing rational representations of finite groups and finding all irreducibles, Noether normalisation in commutative algebra and computation with sheaves and schemes in algebraic geometry.
