Summary on Grant Application Form
We wish to exploit the recent development (by the applicant) of hitherto unexplored C2-symmetric, facially enantiotopic pentalene ligands for the synthesis and study of new organo-f-element complexes, particularly in the following areas:1. U and Th sandwich complexes in a variety of oxidation states, coupled with a detailed study of their magnetism and electronic structure; mono-pentalene U and Th chemistry 2. Ce (IV) complexes, both from a theoretical viewpoint and as one-electron oxidanst 3. their potential for stabilising high oxidation state lanthanide compounds e.g. Pr(IV) 4. the synthesis of chiral mono-pentalene Ln(II) compounds, particular of Sm, and their potential as one-electron reducing agents in organic synthesis 5. the synthesis of mono-pentalene (III) lanthanide(III) complexes, focusing on alkyl derivatives and their application to stereospecific polymerisation of olefins.
