The feasibility of detecting low frequency substrate-adsorbate vibrational modes by sum-frequency spectroscopy will be assessed, with Pt (111)-CO serving as the model system. A flow reactor will be built and tested at Oxford before being installed on a beamline at the free-electron laser faility FELIX at the FOM In stitue, Rijnhuizen, The Netherlands. The strong CO stretching mode at 2100 cm-1 will be used to optimise the experimental conditions for sum-frequency generation from CO on Pt(111), in particular, to ensure that CO is not desorbed from the surface by the laser beams. SF spectra will then acquired in the 20-25 micron region. The weak non-resonant background from Pt can be readily observed. If the non-linear susceptibility of the Pt-CO stretch is comparable to or greater than non-resonant background, the vibrational will be detected. The effect of pressure of CO and temperature on the vibrational spectrum will be surveyed.
