Summary on Grant Application Form
The design and optimisation of membrane separations in the process industries requires quantitative methods for predicting separation performance. The project will produce a critical comparison, systhesis and extension of the methods developed at Uni of Wales Swansea and those developed by Prof Starov. Four topics will be considered. Prediction of the rate of microfiltration and ultrafiltraction processes, the interaction of colloidial particles with charged membrane pores, rejection at nanofiltration membranes, ultrafiltration and microfiltration of polymer solutions. The work is expected to improve fundamental underatnding of membrane processes and to lead to better prodictive methods for industrial use.
