The overall aim is to address the twin challenges of understanding how computation is related to quantum laws, and discovering how best to exploit quantum laws to perform computation.First 18-24 months: The primary aim of the first part of the project is to provide the theory necessary to bring to physical realisation certain novel schemes for computation in the quantum regime. These schemes have been produced by the author during his present postdoctoral research, they are cellular architectures which possess certain radical advantages over transistor based technology. The realisation of such a nanocomputing device would be a singular achievement, particularly if it were the first in the world. The potential benefits to the UK and International electronics industries are self-evident. This project is expected to involve considerable travel and possibly periods of overseas residency.Second 12-18 months: In the latter part of the project the author will return his attention to more radical and difficult computational paradigms such as reversible and quantum computing. Questions to be addressed include how quantum coherence can be best exploited by a practically realisable computer.
