Summary on Grant Application Form
It is widely accepted that manufacturing companies must adopt a strategic approach to the future of the manufacturing and business processes. The manufacturing and Management Division within Cambridge University's Engineering Department has an established record in the development of methodologies to assist companies in the development of such manufacturing strategies. To date these metrologies have mainly been encapsulated in the form of paper-based workbooks. An exception to this has been the Focus Programme a commercial developed software tool based on the outcome of the DTI supported CIM2000 project that assisted SMEs in the development of best practice. This project seeks to combine the commercial strengths of the methodology by which the computer based focus toll was constructed with the proven strengths of the workbook series produced by the Cambridge team. The project will establish the generic principles that govern the potential for paper based tools to be encapsulated in software; the ease by which these principles can be applies; and validate the findings through combining an existing workbook methodology with the interactive software based CIM2000 format that enables more flexible use in interactive workshop environments.
