Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to adapt non-pertubative methods such as the non-linear supersymmetric s model to study electromagnetic and acoustic waves in disordered and chaotic media. A study of electromagnetic waves is particularly timely because of recent interest in applications stemming from random lasers and photonic band gap materials. I will begin by using methods already developed for disordered semiconductors to study the role of the disorder in photonic band gap materials. Then I propose to derive from first principles the s model for electromagnetic waves in disordered media. Connected projects include a s model description of photons in disordered multi-channel wave guides, an investigation of the effect of large fluctuations of the wave amplitude on the lasing threshold of disordered solid-state lasers, and a study of the effect of localisation on non-linear absorption in fibres. Finally, I intend to derive a s model applicable to the description of diffusive and chaotic acoustic waves
