A new form of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) will be developed to investigate both the fundamental processes that determine the outcome of free radical reactions in solution and the effect of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields on radical chemistry.Radicals are usually created in pairs in a well-defined electronic spin state, singlet or triplet. Because geminate recombination is almost always only possible for singlet radical pairs, and because the interconversation of singlet and triplet states is controlled by magnetic interactions, it is possible to influence the recombination yield the radical pair lifetime by applying external magnetic fields. We intend to study the hitherto unexplored chemical effects of oscillating magnetic fields, by exiting EPR transitions in radical pairs, in the absence of a static magnetic field, and monitoring optically the changes in reaction yields so produced. Equipment for this new technique will be designed and built, and the theoretical description of the experiment developed. The influence of solvent, restricted diffusion, radical-radical-magnetic interactions and hyperfine interactions on the recombination yields of a variety of free radical reactions will be investigated in details.
