Summary on Grant Application Form
Technical authors do not so much write texts as design documents. Choices of content and wording are influenced by such factors as available space, relationships with diagrams, and house style for language, punctuation and layout. Although existing systems for automatic language generation can produce good quality texts, they cannot vary their output to meet specifications on layout and style. This limits their practical usefulness.ICONOCLAST will develop a system that generates instructions on how to use software applications, building on the experience gained in a previous project (DRAFTER). Constraints on document design will be collected, along with explanations and discussion, in a catalogue which will be made available to other researchers over the web. We will investigate ways of representing and applying the constraints on a document generation system, using the technology of Constraint Logic Programming. We will also investigate how such a system should support its users (technical authors) in selecting constraints and controlling interactions among them.As well as extending the scope of language generation technology, the project will provide immediate benefits for document designers through its investigation and explicit statement of the factors that interact in the design of effective documentation.
