The vast majority of tetrahydropyran and tetrahydrofuran containing natural products possess one and often two carbon-carbon bonds adjacent to the heteroatom. Likewise, many drugs and agrochemicals contain similar bonding arrangements. For this reason new methods for the construction of carbon-carbon bonds adjacent to the heteroatom in such systems is of considerable importance. We have devised a new strategy to these systems based on a simple concept of rearrangement of anomerically linked substrates to their corresponding carbon linked products upon treatment with Lewis acids. We believe this to be a very general reaction process and all initial experiences are encouraging. We now wish to expoilt these observations to determine the scope of the process by varying the ring size, the substrate linker and the heteroatom arrangements. These methods would then be applied to complex biologically active molecule assembly.
