Summary on Grant Application Form
Acrylamide is the monomer for polacrylamide, with is an important industrial polymer with a wide range of applications. Acrylamide is currently synthesised by the hydrolysis of acrylonitrile, using either a Raney copper or an enzymic catalysts. Both catalysts have disadvantages, so it is desired to develop an organic catalyst that will mimic the action of the enzyme. It is proposed that this can best be achieved through an approach which incorporates metal oxide or a metal sulfide nanostructures within the pores of a zeolite. A rationale is developed which identifies a matrix of suitable catalysts, which will serve as the basis for the experimental programme of catalyst synthesis and testing. Some catalyst characterisation is also proposed, to aid catalyst optimisation.
