The proposed programme, in close collaboration with colleagues from computer science, engineering and economics, is aimed at developing mathematical modelling approaches to several specific problems in the area of communication networks. One topic is to develop models for the stability and fairness of charge-sensitive rate control algorithms for communication networks. One topic is to develop models for the stability and fairness of charge-sensitive rate control algorithms for communication networks. Investigators will cover how protocols such as TCP in the Internet or the Available Bit Rate transfer capability of an ATM network, can be adapted to include charging mechanisms. A second topic is the development of simple and robust control mechanisms for guaranteed quality of service in broadband ATM networks. At the heart of this investigation will be a deeper understanding of the statistical characterisation of multimedia traffic over multiple-timescale: some of the techniques employed come from recent advances in the theory of large deviations. The final topic will consider how mathematical approaches can be used to solve fundamental network design issues associated with wavelength allocation and routing in optical networks using wave division multiplexing and the related topic of the theoretical study of dynamic control of stochastic networks.
