Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is concerned with the investigation of the effects of UV Copper Vapour Laser treatments on synthetic fabrics. The research provides the opportunity to examine the potential of Copper Vapour Laser treatments as an economic and environmental alternative to excimer laser technology. The ensuing laser induced periodic surface structures will provide novel physical modifications to the surface of textile materials and the potential improvements and enhancements will be investigated and applied to the fields of dyeing, printing and finishing. The changes in properties which occur in the dyed/printed UV laser treated fabrics will be characterised and assessed using tensile/mechanical testing, colour measurement, wash fastness, wettability, crease recovery, rub fastness and light fastness. The undyed but UV laser treated fabric surfaces will be characterised by optical microscope, SEM and image analysis techniques. Chemical and physical polymer characterisation will be performed as required.
